Large Tumor in a Horseshoe Kidney

80 year old gentlemen who had a CT scan done by his GI physician for nausea and vomiting

Found to have a 9 cm tumor in his right kidney, but his kidneys were both joined together in the middle of his body, something we describe as a “horseshoe kidney

Ordinarily, such large tumors would require radical nephrectomy with removal of entire kidney; However, such maneuver would risk injury to both kidneys

Consequently,  I removed just the tumor and performed a “partial nephrectomy”, preserving both kidneys from risk

Uneventful case with the patient being discharged home in 3 days, pathology confirmed cancer, and he’s made a full recovery after 4 weeks
